Aluminium Scrap FAQ

Is it normal for aluminium prices to move less dramatically than copper, and why?

Short answer: Generally yes. Aluminium is produced by many smelters across a wide range of countries, and global stock levels tend to run higher relative to consumption than copper's do. Copper mine supply is more geographically concentrated and industrial demand is more sensitive to it, which tends to make copper prices swing harder and faster than aluminium's.

Supply concentration is the key difference

Copper mining is concentrated in a relatively small number of countries, and a disruption at a handful of major mines can noticeably tighten global supply. Aluminium smelting, by contrast, happens across a much broader spread of producing countries, largely because the biggest input cost is electricity rather than a scarce ore deposit — smelters can be built wherever power is cheap. That broader base makes aluminium supply somewhat less exposed to any single disruption.

Inventory buffers also matter

Reported aluminium stockpiles have historically tended to sit higher relative to how much is consumed each year compared to copper. Larger available buffers mean short-term supply hiccups are less likely to translate immediately into sharp price spikes, because there’s more slack to draw on before the market feels a genuine shortage.

What this means for timing a sale

Because aluminium tends to move in a somewhat steadier band than copper, chasing short-term price swings on aluminium scrap is generally less rewarding than it can be for copper — the day-to-day difference from waiting a week or two is usually smaller. That said, aluminium is not immune to real moves: smelter shutdowns (often tied to energy costs), tariffs, or a genuine shift in global demand can still move it meaningfully — it just happens less often and less sharply than with copper.
